Anything blocking the line of sight to your router is blocking the signal (to various degrees depending on the material. You may also consider moving the router to a more central location. If this device is the only thing there, you could instead end the ethernet at a wall jack and plug that one device in directly. Run an ethernet line to the second location (running wire through walls is much easier than it looks) and have the second router there working with the first. You don't need a second modem, you need a second router. Also streaming is between you and the video provider whether you use a cable or wifi. I've never heard of two modems on a given line. You almost sound like you are trying to create a second network. Did recall Netflix only requires 5 mbps or less but not sure if that is for 1080i streaming or lower resolution. I would need wiring for upstairs for the 2nd modem to work. The refresh rate was faster on the main floor with direct connect. I did not know that I've to pay for a 2nd modem but then should not be surprise by their business model. Wifi range extension might be an option (I do not like this option), or you can put an access point if you can get an ethernet cable to the other floor, and connect the AP, that might work better. After this, you can look at different solutions. The 65Mbps should be enough for about 10 different video streams, I think the problem you're experiencing is about the wifi network, and not related to your uplink connection.Ī good test would be directly connecting your device to the modem, or router, and verifying that you can stream without any issues when you're not using wifi. Ilisira wrote:The provisioning system that cable companies use (DOCSIS) does take care of registering a new cable modem, and providing service to it, and it will not allow a second cable modem to be used on the same account unless it is provisioned (and paid for). If your house is too big for a single Wifi Access Point you will have to either add range extenders or run ethernet wires to the areas where you need faster speed. 2.4 Ghz should be more than adequate for HD video streaming. If you can't get 65 mbps anywhere it means your ISP is not providing you the service you're paying for.Īre you using 2.4 Ghz or 5 Ghz for your wifi? 5 Ghz is technically faster but it has a shorter range than 2.4 Ghz. If you are able to get 65 mbps some places but not others it means your Wifi signal is weak. If you are able to achieve 65 mbps everywhere the issue most likely is with the content provider and not your ISP or hardware. Walk around to the areas of your house where you are having issues and test your internet speed. I would recommend downloading a speed test app to your phone. The only reason to add another modem would be if you needed to have two IP addresses for some reason. It will not increase your 65 mbps download bandwidth. I am not sure what you hope to accomplish by adding another modem. An HD Netflix stream should be under 5 mbps. Are you referring to 5 GHZ wifi? A 65 mbps connection should be more than adequate for watching Netflix. Unlike a range extender, they extend the same network, rather than creating a new extension wifi network.Īdded the next tier internet service, so my DL speed is suppose to be 65 mbps at 5G. If you want to get fancy, you might look into one of the new consumer net mesh network wifi systems. I've never found a cable company that prohibits using your own, they just prefer you don't as they can eventually charge you many multiples of what the modem is worth.Īs for the upstairs, just get a range extender (your current modem may or may not have that functionality). I would buy a modem of your own rather than renting them. Another point, on my cable bill, there is no monthly charge for their modem. Is there another alternative, such as using my old 2.4 GHz Almond as a range extender? BTW, Optimum would provide me a "free" range extender. Is it legal to add a 2nd Arris modem on my own, by splitting the signal for upstairs? Do I need to call Optimum for activation? Called Optimum about a 2nd modem, but they'll charge me for $30 plus for another internet connection. I'm trying to direct connect to a 2nd modem rather than streaming. However, I do see buffering occasionally when I stream 1080i, especially on the 2nd floor. Added the next tier internet service, so my DL speed is suppose to be 65 mbps at 5G. We own a 2-story home with their Arris TM822 modem and my Securifi Almond+ router on the main floor.
