With a strong alibi, and the Madison Police Department in disarray after a recent spate of corruption scandals, Hamburg was never charged. ![]() While Madison wrestles with troubling revelations about his mother, the most unsettling conflict comes from Madison’s obligation to bring into question those inside his community and members of his own family.įollowing the murder, attention first turned to Barbara’s ex-husband, Jeffrey Hamburg, who battled with her over financial issues including child support and was due in court with her that very day. He uncovered a deep web of buried familial secrets, connections to shadowy criminal figures, and years-old resentments in his deceptively serene hometown. Over the course of eight years, Barbara’s son, Madison Hamburg, interviewed his family members and many others, longing to learn more about his mother and gather evidence in hopes of solving her murder. Investigators speculated her murder from blunt force trauma was a crime of passion, but without enough evidence, the case grew cold. To me, the greatest success of this documentary is that while I started watching it for the reason that I suspect we all watch true crime documentaries - for the thrill of trying to solve the mystery myself from my living room - I continued watching it because Hamburg was so earnest in his desire to discover his mother as a person, and never lost sight of that as the ultimate goal of this project. ![]() Instead, Hamburg was able to craft a story that was thoroughly compelling for viewers while maintaining what appeared at all times to be sincere compassion and empathy as a family member. ![]() ![]() Or indeed, that he would have already made his mind up as to who murdered his mother and would have a singular vision in bringing that person down. Considering that this is Madison Hamburg's first-ever documentary and that his own mother and family are the subject of the docuseries, I was surprised at how excellent this was.
